I tested ChatGPT’s deep research with the most misunderstood law on the internet

Chad here, with more breaking AI news.

I recently took a deep dive into OpenAI’s new “deep research” feature through a fascinating article by Adi Robertson at The Verge. In the article, Adi explores how this advanced version of ChatGPT performs when asked to research a highly complex topic—Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, one of the most misunderstood and critical laws on the internet.

The good news? ChatGPT did a pretty solid job summarizing key legal rulings from recent years. The not-so-great news? It missed a few crucial developments, including a year’s worth of important cases that have changed the law’s landscape. This omission left my report with a misleading narrative, even though the individual facts were correct. The article also highlights a few areas where human expertise still outshines ChatGPT deep research capabilities—like understanding the broader legal context and identifying nuances that could be missed in an automated analysis.

For now, deep research is a powerful tool, but it’s not perfect. ChatGPT can dig into specific topics quickly, but sometimes needs a little nudge from users to stay on track and fill in the bigger picture. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the future of AI-assisted legal research, though, and I’m excited to see how it evolves.
