Google Brings AI Image Verification to Gemini
11/21/2025 – Google today announced that users can now verify whether an image was generated or edited by Google AI directly in the Gemini app. The feature uses SynthID, Google’s imperceptible digital watermarking technology introduced in 2023, to detect and label AI-created imagery; Google says more than 20 billion items have already been watermarked.
To use the tool, Gemini users can upload an image and ask questions such as “Was this created with Google AI?” or “Is this AI-generated?” Gemini will check for the SynthID watermark and provide contextual information about the content. Google has also tested a SynthID Detector verification portal with journalists and media professionals.
We introduced SynthID in 2023. Since then, over 20 billion AI-generated pieces of content have been watermarked using SynthID, and we have been testing our SynthID Detector, a verification portal, with journalists and media professionals.

The company said the rollout is part of a broader push for content transparency. This week, images generated by Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image) in the Gemini app, Vertex AI and Google Ads will include C2PA metadata, and Google plans to expand SynthID verification to video and audio and to bring these features to more surfaces, including Search. Google is also pursuing cross-industry standards through the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) and intends to support C2PA content credentials for models outside its ecosystem.
